The Inbetweeners 2
Inbetweeners 2 is about about a group of 4 mates, who go 'travelling' around Australia to find Jay's girlfriend. During their journey, they manage to cause mayhem wherever they do- clubs, water park, hostel. The 4 mates all have different characteristics:
Will- is the nerd, who always tries to make the sensible, calculated decisions when traveling, but ends up 'dying' in the desert with his mates.
Jay- the compulsive liar/exaggerator, he always makes up wild, unbelievable stories to cover for mistakes, or things he's simply just embarrassed about.
Simon- the most 'normal' of the group, throughout his travels he trying to break up with his psycho girlfriend, but ends up proposing to her, he is the typical nice guy.
Neil- the dumb one, he has no filter, or brain, it seems like throughout the film, for example pooing on the water-slide.
One key youth culture theme explored in the imbetweeners, is the University experience. Simon, Neil and Will turn up to one of Will's Uni parties, but it is clear they have played a joke on him, by saying it was fancy dress, and he has fallen for it. Another stereotypical uni experience that is shown, ios when they return back Will's flat, and his flatmates have stuck everything in his room to the roof. This is all portrayed in a funny way, but you know as the audience that Will is being bullied, emphasizing the classic uni experience for a nerd.
Another key youth culture explored in this, is the stereotypical, white, middle class travelling experience, for example, the people they meet at the hostel who have dreadlocks and play guitar, gloat about saving villages, and how enlightened they have become; making a mockery middle class travelers, who think they are earthly due to the amount of money they are able to spend. This is linked to the Gerbner theory, as most people think that young people who go traveling are living off "mummy and daddy" making the audience perceive travelling as something done by pretentious rich kids.
Thirdly, another stereotypical youth culture theme explored is the way in which the group of boys talk about woman; as it is done in such a derogatory, rude, shameful way. This is a stereotypical thought about boys, emphasised and exaggerated in this film, by the way in which, Jay especially, talks about woman in dirty, detailed ways, but the audience all know he's lying about his 'experience' and this is supported by the fact that not one of the boys slept with any girls while travelling.
