Lost Without You

Image
After deciding to make a music video for this song, a few weeks after we discovered that someone else had recently posted their own music video of Freya Ridings 'Lost Without You'. After watching theirs we related with some of their ideas, but also saw a few things that we thought we could perhaps interpret in to ours. The way in which they caption her isolation is what we were aspiring to do before we watched the music video, and most of the techniques they used we had alread incorporated and filmed, but one of the ways in whihc we had not thought, was when the female protagonist is clealry so distracted by her heartbreak that when crossing the road she does not realise a car coming. This creates suspense for the audience, but also an understannding of how much she is hurting. One of the methods we were planning to use, which they did too, was where she was on thee train station platform alone. We are planning to also expand on this idea by using commuters to walk around La...

Audience research for 'Lost Without You'

After we changed our song we had to see if this song would be liked. As this is not a well known song by a well known Artist like ________ by Sia. This meant that we had to play the song to people and ask them directly about what they thought about it. The feedback we got was positive as poeple liked the song but also thought it was a good idea to make a music video for a song that doesnt have one yet as it means are ideas are not manipulated by the music video already made. Also people will not compare our music video to one already mmade, like they most likely would have with Sia. As people liked the song, even though they had never heard of the artist, or song before, we think people will enjoy the music vidoe as the whole thing will be brand new to them, making it more intriguing and fascinating.

Lighting

Image
For our contemporary dance footage, we used the MEC at school. It was a perfect location as it had a variety of lights to choose from, black out blinds, and a spring floor. We thought about using the coloured lights to create a vibrant feel and a feast for the eyes. We realised that the spotlight though was much more simple and effective. It reflected the tone of the song too as it created the sense of the dancer being melancholy and wistful. Whereas the tone of the coloured lights would not reflect this, instead it would have done the complete opposite and suggest she was happy.

Locations for new song

Image
Now we have changed our song, we think some of the locations we were planning to shoot at will not be as effective as the ones we have decided to use now. We are going to focus on 3 main locations. Forest/Park, Studio for dancing, and a Train Station. These locations will allow us to tell the story of the song 'Lost Without You'. We will be able to get a range of shots which will show the main character as isolated and heartbroken, representing the message of the song well.

Shot list

Image
We made this shot list so we know what footage we need from each location. This means filming will be more efficient as we will be able to go to the location, knowing exactly what we need to film there. If we didn't make this, it could mean that we don't the correct footage from each location, making editing difficult and having to waste time returning to the location to re film.

Change of Song

While planning our production for our Sia music video, we realised there were a few issues that came up and that the ideas we were having may work better for a different song. The issues we had came from the ideas about colour, as the practical side of it was very complicated and the equipment we have would not be able to capture the detail we would need for it to be effective and look good. Also while Lauren was trying to choreograph the dance, she was finding it difficult to do contemporary dancing though-out due to the change in tempo, and emotions. Due to this we found that searching for a slower, more emotive song may be a good idea as the dance would flow better, making the video more effective. We now have reevaluated the ideas we had and how we can apply them to a different song in order for our planning to not go to waste, and for our final piece to be improved by the song. The song we have chosen  is  called 'Lost Without You' by Freya Ridings; it is a slow, emoti...

Location

Image
For our media product we're planning to to use 4 locations: a studio, forest, beach and train station platform. This will provide our media product with depth and intrigue the audience. We are planning to use a forest in Bladon as it is accessible bus also appears in recording as if it is very isolated. We are planning to go to Bournemouth to get our beach shots as it has the view we want for our media product. We will use the Oxford train station, as some platforms are busy, but in contrast some can be out of use, therefore meaning we can get both hectic and calm shots

The Inbetweeners 2

Image
Inbetweeners 2 is about about a group of 4 mates, who go 'travelling' around Australia to find Jay's girlfriend. During their journey, they manage to cause mayhem wherever they do- clubs, water park, hostel. The 4 mates all have different characteristics: Will- is the nerd, who always tries to make the sensible, calculated  decisions when traveling, but ends up 'dying' in the desert with his mates. Jay- the compulsive liar/exaggerator, he always makes up wild, unbelievable stories to cover for mistakes, or things he's simply just embarrassed about. Simon- the most 'normal' of the group, throughout his travels he trying to break up with his psycho girlfriend, but ends up proposing to her, he is the typical nice guy. Neil- the dumb one, he has no filter, or brain, it seems like throughout the film, for example pooing on the water-slide. One key youth culture theme explored in the imbetweeners, is the University experience. Simon, Neil and Will tu...

Casting

Image
When casting we needed someone who was able to dance, but also act as there is a mix of both in our music video. Lauren had videos of her dancing on social media, and also had the young, youthful look we were going for in our music video, and is able to act to the standard we need her to so she was perfect. As Lauren is able to do contemporary dance with a mix of ballet, it enables us to film the genre we wanted to.

How is youth culture represented in Quadrophenia?

Image
Quadrophenia is about Mods and Rockers in the 1960s. Mods embrace European 'modern' fashion, influenced by the french and Italian.  They rode vespas/ lambrettas that were decorated with lights and badges which were usually branded items that were popular. They liked to listen to Jazz and Northern Soul as they could identify with the black experience in America as people in the North were experiencing relatable occurrences- bad pay, factory work, discrimination. 'The Who' were also a huge influence to the Mods as they were the poster boys of mods. The rockers wore leather jackets, which was very much a part of their identity due to the badges added, this was usually worn with Levi jeans and biker boots. They rode motorbikes, drank alcohol and listened mainly to 1950s rock n roll. Jimmy was a proud Mod. At the beginning he is the popular one in the group, loved by all his Mod friends, chasing a girl he fancies called Steph. There is a situation when he me...

Questionnaire results

Without an audience, there is no point creating a media product. The media industry spends millions ensuring they are providing the correct content to their audience by finding out what their target audience want from their media product. No matter how amazing, or creative a product. Therefore it is key that we identify who are core audience is, and also who are broader audiences would be, so we are able to create a media product that will appeal to a majority of people. I created a questionnaire for 15 people to answer so that I could get a clear idea of what the public like. The age range was 15-50, and there was a mix of genders. These were the results Have you watched the ‘How deep is your love’ music video? Yes=11  No=4 Have you watched Sia? Yes=9  No=6 Do you listen to pop songs regularly? Yes=6  No=9 Do you like there being a story-line in a music video? Yes=14  No=1 Do you listen to pop song regularly? Yes=12  No=3 How often...

Questionnaire

I have created a questionnaire for people to answer so that I can understand what people like, which will enable us to create a music video that people will want to watch, and enjoy.   Questions Answers How often do you watch music videos? Do you listen to Sia? Yes/No Have you ever watched a Sia music Video? Yes/No Do you like there being a storyline in a music video? Yes/No Do you listen to pop songs regularly? Yes/No Have you watched the ‘How deep is your love’ music video Yes/No If so do you like it? What do you want from a music video?

Audience reserch

Image
The audience we are looking at ranges from 12-40, as Sia's music appeals to a large variety of people. We are mainly targeting girls/woman to her music, as it is pop song about getting through break-up; this is a good song to use as, our younger audience especially, will be able to relate to the lyrics and the songs message. The visuals we are going to use are going to be similar to Calvin Harris's 'How Deep Is Your Love', which reached number 2 in the charts and has had 1.1 billion views on YouTube. This shows that the video was successful and highly popular with the public. The use of coloured lighting and location colouring being the same combines the music video and would work really well for our song 'Alive'. Once we do the music video, we will release it on YouTube, as this is where are audience are most likely to view it as it is accessible. In our music video we are planning to have a character whom is clearly heart broken and struggling with a b...

The boy whose skin fell off

Image
This was another documentary which bought up major moral issues, as it opened with Jonny Kennedy, a 37 year old man, dead in his wheelchair. The documentary followed Jonny, a man suffering from a rare skin disease DEB, for the last 4 months of his life. It showed him planning his funeral, and doing the last few things he wanted to do before he died, for example fly plane and have a house warming. It also showed him fund-raise and bring awareness to the disease before he died, in order to help others by trying to find a cure. This documentary bought up controversial issues such as how people deal with the inevitability of  death, if Jonny's mum knew about the condition before he was born, would she have aborted, and the representation of spirituality and religion through Jonny's opinions and life. This documentary was much more hard hitting than 'the bridge' as you built a relationship with Jonny. You were able to get to know his personality, and as he was a likabl...

Story board

Image
This is the story board we have created for our music video. It shows the main scenes we are planning to cover, focusing on the story we will be trying to get across, and our focus on colour. We want the main theme of our music video to relate to colour as we think that can me a metaphor of how beautiful life is and why Sia is celebrating being alive after her heartbreak.

Audience research

Without an audience, there is no point creating a media product. The media industry spends millions ensuring they are providing the correct content to their audience by finding out what their target audience want from their media product. No matter how amazing, or creative a product What I will need to know for my production: ·          Who your audience is ·          Age/interests/views/opinions- young- really modern, current. ·          What other typed of media they consume ·          How they consume ·          Where do they get it from ·          Who they identify themselves with- what group do they come from- fan girls, ·          How much they consume ·      ...

Feedback from production pitch

The feedback we received from our class was positive as they felt our idea was strong and we had a clear plan/ pitch too express the ideal music video we want to create. They specifically liked our idea that the music video will begin in black and white, and then develop in to vibrant colour when the chorus line "I'm alive" is sung, emphasising the change in the dancers mood from depressed to one of hope and happiness.  The class also enjoyed our mood board which we had created as they felt it expressed our ideas clearly in visual detail.  The other idea we had about colour was also highly liked, as we are planning to use strong coloured lighting to connect the dancer with different locations, for examples a green lighting will be on Lauren in the studio which will then be edited to cutaway to a vibrant green forest, showing one of the dancers memories. Overall I am pleased with the feedback as it gives me and the group confidence that our music video will be succe...

Moral responsibility in film - The Bridge by Eric Steel

Image
This documentary brings up major moral questions about whether the events filmed, should be allowed to be watched, or even filmed. The controversial documentary was directed, and filmed by Eric Steel, an American filmmaker and producer. In my opinion I think filming people jumping, and then finding out about their lives, and reasoning for doing it, is not wrong; on the contrary I think it is a respectful way to bring awareness to issues that play out daily, using their suicide to educate and potentially help others.

Review of my AS Production

Image
Synopsis Mine, Lauren's, Ruari's, and Ciaran's production was about a young woman who is a werewolf but unaware she is. At first she seems like a vulnerable, weak, victim, but it become apparent further in that she is actually the attacker; a dangerous strong, independent character. In our film opening sequence our protagonist wakes up in her room and gets ready to go on a run while listening to the radio- explaining the recent attacks in the area, and the police warning which has been given to the public. Once she has left for her run, a suspicious man begins to follow her (making the audience curious and suspicious) - he begins to run, and then leaves the scene- a bit later he returns in the woods, at the same time the young woman finds a dead body. A twist occurs when instead of the creepy man being the threat, the young woman attacks the man. Throughout our media product, our protagonist does not speak, nor is there any voice-over, this means the focus is on the moveme...
